Point Lonsdale

Point Lonsdale

Postby amanda » Mon Jul 28, 2008 9:20 am

I've been a Queenslander now for about 20 years, but in my past life I was a Victorian. This is a shot of the lighthouse in my beautiful old home town of Point Lonsdale.

A friend of my fathers was the lighthosue keeper way back then, and it was such a treat when he took us into the lighthouse. Even though I was terrified of climbing all the way to the top, the spectacle of it was magnificent. We always dropped a coin from the top and counted how long it took to hit the bottom. But even better was sitting beside Ned as he spoke to the pilots and guided them in through the heads, particularly if the sea was rough, and even better if it was an international ship - I always thought it was so exciting if a Russian ship came through. Very fond memories indeed.

Very good picture. Yes I agree you could not find a postcard to beat yours Amanda.

Gypsy, as you say you like lighthouses you should have a look at http://www.lighthouse.net.au where you will get the story and history of every light house in Australia. To view Point Lonsdale lighthouse just click on site map then click Victoria then all the pictures of the lighthouses in that state will come up. Click on the picture and you will get all the info.

Cheers

Glad you like that site and brought memories. Brought back memories to me as well because in my sea going days there was many a time I looked for that light..... Or at least the loom of it when it was rainy.

Cheers

Hmmm, these photos I thought I took at Point Lonsdale or Queenscliff, but not quite sure. Lighthouse looks different.

I might have got lost. The photos were taken in 2003 and went for a drive out of Geelong down towards Barwon Heads

Hi Troy

By looking through the lighthouse web site it appears the lighthouse is referred to as The White Lighthouse at Queenscliff.

cheers

That's definetely the white lighthouse in Queenscliff. You've now brought back more memories for me with the photo of the pipe running out to sea. When I was a kid there wasn't the break that appears to be in it now, and everyday without fail we'd all walk along the pipe at low tide right out on to the rocks. Funny, but it seemed so much higher when I was a kid.
