A friend of my fathers was the lighthosue keeper way back then, and it was such a treat when he took us into the lighthouse. Even though I was terrified of climbing all the way to the top, the spectacle of it was magnificent. We always dropped a coin from the top and counted how long it took to hit the bottom. But even better was sitting beside Ned as he spoke to the pilots and guided them in through the heads, particularly if the sea was rough, and even better if it was an international ship - I always thought it was so exciting if a Russian ship came through. Very fond memories indeed.
It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt - then it's bloody hilarious!
